Restaurant Review – A Return to an Old Favorite… and a Wonderful New Discovery

By R. Lee Ingalls

Recently I had the pleasure of reacquainting myself with a couple of Pappas restaurants. Years ago, they were my favorite restaurant group, but their popularity eventually became their greatest challenge, at least for me. Long wait times and crowded dining rooms meant I gradually began taking my business elsewhere. As often happens, once you discover new favorites, your old ones slowly fade into the background.

That changed in April.

With several family birthdays to celebrate, we gathered at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen on Interstate 10 near Beltway 8. One of my longtime favorites has always been their Greek Salad. Prepared tableside, it features crisp lettuce, fresh vegetables, imported Kalamata olives, capers, peperoncini peppers, feta cheese, and Pappas’ signature Greek dressing. It traditionally includes a couple of shrimp, but I always request extra, transforming it into what I affectionately call the Shrimp Greek Salad. It was every bit as delicious as I remembered, fresh, vibrant, and generously portioned.

The rest of our table was equally impressed with their meals, but exceptional food only tells part of the story. What truly elevated the experience was the service. From the warm welcome at the hostess stand to the attentive servers who anticipated every need, the staff made us feel like valued guests rather than simply another table in the dining room.

Pappadeaux is certainly not inexpensive, but when you consider the quality of the ingredients, the generous portions, and the outstanding service, the value becomes apparent. It is easy to understand why the restaurant continues to enjoy such enduring success.

Just a few weeks later, another family birthday gave us an opportunity to try somewhere entirely new: YiaYia’s on Richmond Avenue.

Once again, the service set the tone from the moment we walked through the door. Our party of four was seated immediately, and although the dining room featured a continuous banquette serving several tables, the spacing allowed each group to enjoy its own conversation without distraction.

At first glance, I was surprised by the relatively concise menu. Rather than being overwhelming, it reflected confidence, a restaurant focused on doing fewer things exceptionally well.

We began with the focaccia bread and hummus, two appetizers I rarely order. Both exceeded every expectation. The hummus was remarkably smooth and creamy, free of the graininess that often accompanies the dish, with rich flavor that remained beautifully balanced. The focaccia was warm, soft, and infused with olive oil, served alongside a butter, olive oil, and seasoning combination that complemented it perfectly.

For the main course, two of us selected the Pasta Lena, featuring clams, lump crab, shrimp, casarecce pasta, basil, and pine nuts. It was simply outstanding. Rustic in appearance yet elegant in execution, every ingredient contributed to a dish layered with rich, earthy flavors. Equally impressive was the generosity of the seafood. The abundance of clams and lump crab left no doubt that quality and quantity were both priorities. Even better, the meal tasted freshly prepared from start to finish rather than assembled from components waiting to be reheated.

Another member of our party chose the Heritage Chicken Souvlaki, perfectly grilled skewers served with tomatoes, Cypriot grains, and tzatziki. Like the pasta, the presentation embraced a rustic Mediterranean style while delivering exceptional flavor.

The birthday guest ordered the Redfish Sounio, served with calamari and roasted artichokes. She couldn’t stop talking about it throughout dinner. The preparation of the artichokes, unlike anything she had experienced before, quickly became one of her favorite elements of the meal. In fact, she enjoyed the dish so much she insisted on finishing every bite rather than taking any home.

Both dining experiences were memorable for different reasons. Pappadeaux reminded me why it earned my loyalty years ago, while YiaYia’s introduced me to a restaurant that delivers elevated cuisine, exceptional hospitality, and an atmosphere well suited for special occasions. While YiaYia’s is certainly a premium dining experience, it is one that justifies the investment.

The Pappas organization summarizes its philosophy this way:

“At Pappas, it’s all about great food, impeccable service and the Pappas team members who make it happen. From the hostess greeting Guests with a smile, our chefs preparing delicious offerings, to the server setting down a custom-made entrée with care, everyone at Pappas plays a role in our success.”

After returning to Pappadeaux, I can say they continue to live up to those words.

All I have left to say is one simple word: Bravo.
