Spotlighting Locally Owned – Silverlust

In a neighborhood as dynamic and ever-evolving as Montrose, it is always exciting to highlight new businesses finding their footing. This month, however, I wanted to pause and recognize something far more enduring—a business that has not only stood the test of time, but has become part of the fabric of the community itself.

Silverlust Jewelry has been serving Montrose for more than four decades, a remarkable milestone in any industry, and especially in one as personal and relationship-driven as jewelry. The store first opened its doors in July of 1984 at its original Waughcrest location. Owner Herschel Teper recalls those early days with clarity: “I always wanted to be at this location, but it was not ready when we opened our doors, so our first two and a half years were at the Waughcrest location.”

That patience and long-term vision would prove to be foundational—not only for the business, but for the loyal customer base that would follow.

I can speak to that loyalty personally. I have been a Silverlust customer for several decades, and like many who walk through those doors, my relationship with the store goes beyond a simple transaction. More than twenty years ago, during a visit, I mentioned to Herschel that I could not wear silver jewelry because it would turn my skin black. Without hesitation, he offered both an explanation and a solution. The issue, he explained, was not the silver itself, but the alloy content in other pieces I had worn. His recommendation was simple: try one of his sterling silver rings. If it caused the same reaction, he would buy it back—no questions asked.

I took him up on that offer. That ring is still on my hand today, and it has never once caused the issue I had experienced before. It was a small moment, perhaps, but one that speaks volumes about the confidence, knowledge, and integrity that define his approach to business.

When I asked Herschel why he chose Montrose as the home for Silverlust, his answer reflected both honesty and heart: “I don’t want to say it’s because of the diversity of the people, but the fact is, that is the reason. I love all of our customers, whether assisting them in making the decision on the jewelry they wear or helping them restore jewelry that has been damaged.”

That sentiment is not just something he says—it is something you feel the moment you walk into the store. There is an energy, an enthusiasm, and a genuine desire to help that has clearly carried Silverlust through the decades.

Today, Silverlust offers far more than what you see in the display cases. Customers can explore a wide selection of handcrafted and curated pieces, work directly with Herschel to design custom jewelry that tells their own story, or entrust him with the restoration of treasured items that carry generations of meaning. It is this full-circle approach—creation, personalization, and preservation—that sets the business apart.

In a world where businesses often come and go, it is both rare and worth celebrating when one remains steadfast, continuing to serve its community with the same passion it began with. Silverlust Jewelry is not just a store; it is a testament to what happens when expertise, integrity, and a genuine love for people come together.

Congratulations to Silverlust on more than 40 years in Montrose—an achievement well earned, and a legacy still very much in the making.
