The first restaurant I have chosen to review is a true Houston institution: Ragin’ Cajun, located at 4302 Richmond Avenue. I have been a loyal patron for more than 40 years, and remarkably, even after all this time, the dining experience feels much the same as it did on my very first visit. That kind of consistency is rare, and worth celebrating.
Ragin’ Cajun first opened its doors in 1974 as Ray Hay’s Cajun Po-Boys, serving a straightforward Louisiana menu of po’boys, gumbo, and red beans and rice. By 1976, a slight change in ownership brought with it a new name and a broader vision. Rebranded as Ragin’ Cajun, the restaurant expanded its offerings to include boiled crawfish along with fried, grilled, and boiled seafood, rounding out what has since become one of Houston’s most authentic Louisiana-style dining experiences.
I had the pleasure of living in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, for several years, and one of the things I remember most fondly about those small, country-style eateries was the feeling that you weren’t just out to eat, you were attending a gathering of close friends and family. Even if you didn’t know a single person in the room, you were treated like long-lost kin. Ragin’ Cajun captures that same spirit effortlessly. The atmosphere is friendly, welcoming, and genuinely glad you’ve come through the door.
As for the meal itself, Ragin’ Cajun operates with a casual counter-service style. You place your order at the counter, receive a number, and when it’s called, you head back to the bar to collect your food. I ordered one of their specials: a half muffaletta sandwich paired with a small bowl of rice and beans, topped with cheese and onion.
To say I enjoy a muffaletta would be an understatement. What truly makes this sandwich special is the olive salad. I’m so fond of it that I spent years developing my own version, and I keep a jar of it in my refrigerator at all times. While Ragin’ Cajun’s olive salad didn’t quite reach the briny intensity of my own, it was still quite good, just not exceptional by my admittedly high standards.
The rice and beans, however, were outstanding, among the best I’ve had in Houston, and they instantly transported me back to my days in Louisiana. The balance of beans, rice, sausage, and broth was spot-on, delivering that familiar, slow-building heat at the back of the throat. Not overpowering, just enough to remind you that this is Cajun cooking done right.
I also ordered half a dozen of their Signature Char-Grilled Oysters, and all I can say is: oh my goodness. These were nothing short of exceptional. Rich with spicy, garlicky flavor, perfectly toasted on top, and tender beneath, they were bite-sized but deeply satisfying. Next time, I won’t hesitate, I’ll be ordering the full dozen. This dish alone is worth making a special trip for.
Brett ordered the shrimp po-boy along with a bowl of gumbo, and he was equally impressed. He noted that the bread on the po-boy was among the best he’s had at any Cajun restaurant we frequent, with a flavor and texture that tasted almost homemade, though I can’t personally confirm that. As for the gumbo, it ranks right behind my love of muffalettas as one of my all-time favorite dishes, and I’ve sampled gumbo at many restaurants across Houston. This one, without question, stood above the rest. Like the rice and beans, it left that gentle heat lingering just long enough to make you want another spoonful. Another dish well worth a dedicated visit.
Overall, this was an extremely pleasant dining experience and has firmly earned Ragin’ Cajun a place on my list of regulars. When considering value, portion size, quality, and service, some menu prices may initially seem a bit high, but that’s simply the reality of today’s restaurant landscape. Rising costs affect everyone, and Ragin’ Cajun clearly prioritizes quality. When a small issue arose during our visit, it was handled quickly and professionally, service is clearly a top priority here.
If you’re looking for a place where you can enjoy a great meal with family or friends, relax, be a little loud, and feel right at home, Ragin’ Cajun is exactly where you should be.
